Terms of service

These terms are an agreement between you and the operators of Awning ("Awning", "we", "us"). They apply when you open or run a business with Awning ("owner"), buy from an Awning business ("buyer"), call an Awning business, or use awning.sh, api.awning.sh, any *.awning.sh storefront, any custom domain Awning hosts, or the Awning PayBox plugin. If you do not agree, do not use Awning.

On this page (17 sections)

1. What Awning does#

Awning turns a description of a business into a working storefront. From one sentence it drafts a name, copy and priced offers; it can open the business on a free awning.sh subdomain or, for a fee, with a custom domain, a phone number and an AI receptionist; and it lists the business in a public directory where people and AI agents can buy from it.

You use Awning through an AI agent connected to PayBox, a service run by MoonPay. PayBox's own terms apply to your PayBox account, wallet and approvals.

2. Payments are non-custodial#

  • Every sale is paid in USDC on Base directly to the owner's wallet. Awning never receives, holds or controls sales money.
  • Awning receives only the Pro opening price, paid to Awning's wallet.
  • Every payment is a request you approve in PayBox. Awning cannot charge you without your approval and never charges automatically.
  • Payments on a blockchain are final. Awning cannot reverse a payment once it has settled. Check the amount and recipient PayBox shows you before you approve.
  • You are responsible for the security of your wallet. Awning will never ask for a private key, a recovery phrase, a card number or a bank password.

3. Prices and what you get#

  • Free: a storefront at <name>.awning.sh, a directory listing and checkout paid to your wallet. $0.
  • Pro: everything in Free, plus a custom domain for its first year and a phone number with an AI receptionist for the first month. The price is the domain's registrar price plus $9.00, shown before you approve. The quote is valid until the plan expires.
  • Awning does not take a fee on sales.
  • Renewal of the domain, phone number and receptionist after the included period is not yet available. Before anything included in Pro ends, we will tell you what it costs to keep it. If you do not renew, the phone line and receptionist may be switched off and the domain may expire. Nothing renews or charges automatically.

4. If an opening fails#

  • A Pro payment is settled only after the domain, phone number, receptionist and hosting have been set up. If setup fails before settlement, the payment is not taken.
  • If a failure is discovered after the payment settled, Awning sends the same amount back to the wallet that paid.
  • Awning does not refund sales. Sales go to the owner's wallet, and refunds for them are between the buyer and the owner.

5. Owner responsibilities#

Your business is your business. As an owner you are responsible for:

  • everything your business offers, says and does, including the storefront, offers, prices and what the receptionist tells callers based on your business details;
  • reviewing the draft before you open, and keeping your listing accurate;
  • delivering what you sell, on time and as described, and handling questions, cancellations, returns and refunds with your buyers;
  • having any licences, permits and registrations your business needs where you operate;
  • taxes on your sales;
  • complying with laws that apply to you, including consumer protection, privacy and marketing laws;
  • the information buyers share with you (notes and contact details), which you may use only to fulfil and support their order.

You must be at least 18 and able to enter a contract to open a business.

6. Acceptable use#

You may not use Awning to open, list, promote or sell any of the following:

  • weapons, ammunition, explosives, or parts and instructions for making them;
  • drugs, controlled substances, prescription medicine, or anything sold "without a prescription";
  • tobacco, nicotine and vaping products;
  • adult content and sexual services;
  • gambling and betting;
  • investment, trading, lending, crypto-trading, "fund recovery" and money-transfer services, and any scheme that promises returns;
  • counterfeit or replica goods, forged documents, fake reviews or followers, stolen goods or card data;
  • hacking, malware, account-takeover, SIM-swap, DDoS or surveillance services;
  • anything that collects passwords, one-time codes, wallet keys or recovery phrases, or that "verifies", "unlocks" or "recovers" accounts or wallets;
  • impersonation of another company, brand, person or government body, including names, domains, offers or receptionist scripts designed to look like them;
  • anything illegal where you or your buyers are, or that infringes someone else's trademark, copyright or other rights;
  • spam: opening businesses in bulk, or businesses that do not intend to sell anything real.

Awning screens business descriptions, drafts and offers against this list automatically and may refuse a business that matches it. Passing the screening does not make a business allowed.

You also may not attack, overload or probe Awning or its providers beyond what our security policy allows, or use another owner's token.

7. AI-generated content and illustrative images#

  • Awning uses AI to draft your business name, tagline, description, offers and prices, and to run your phone receptionist. AI output can be wrong. You must review it, and you are responsible for it once you open.
  • Awning is instructed not to invent facts such as awards, reviews, years in business, certifications or addresses. If anything in your draft is not true, change it or do not open.
  • Artwork and images on storefronts are illustrative. They are not photographs of the owner's actual products, premises or people unless the owner says so.
  • Buyers: storefront text and receptionist answers come from the owner's description and AI. Confirm anything important with the owner.

8. Phone line and AI receptionist#

  • A Pro business gets a phone number answered by an AI voice agent, or by an automated spoken greeting that reads the business's details when no agent is attached.
  • The receptionist answers from the business details and offers. It cannot take payments, change orders or make commitments for the owner beyond what those details say. It may take a message for the owner.
  • Calls are carried by our telephony provider and, when the AI agent is attached, processed by our voice provider, which may record the audio and keep a transcript. See the Privacy Policy.
  • Owners must not use the line to call or message people who have not asked to be contacted.

9. Domains and phone numbers#

  • Custom domains are registered through Awning's registrar account and phone numbers are bought in Awning's telephony account, so the business can be set up in one step.
  • While your business is in good standing, the domain points to your storefront and the number to your receptionist.
  • If you want the domain transferred to your own registrar account, ask us. Transfers follow the registrar's rules and timelines.
  • Domain and number availability and prices come from our providers and can change until you approve the payment.

10. Owner token#

When your business opens you receive an owner token (awn_ot_…). Anyone who has it can add offers to your business and read its orders. Keep it private and give it only to agents you trust. If it leaks, contact us and we will replace it.

11. Public information#

Your business name, description, offers, prices, city, phone number, storefront address and receiving wallet address are public. Openings and sales appear on awning.sh/live with the business name, the amount and the blockchain transaction. Blockchain transactions are public and permanent.

12. Suspension and removal#

We may pause checkout, hide a business from the directory, take a storefront offline, stop a phone line or remove a business if it breaks these terms, if we receive credible reports of fraud, phishing or harm, if the law requires it, or if a provider requires it. Where we can, we will tell the owner why. We do not refund a Pro fee for a business removed for breaking these terms.

To report a business, use awning.sh/report. When three different people report the same business within a day, its checkout pauses automatically until we review it. For anything urgent, or if you lost money, email abuse@awning.sh.

13. Third-party services#

Awning depends on services run by others, including PayBox, the x402 payment facilitator, the Base network and the USDC contract, our registrar, hosting, telephony, voice and AI providers. Their outages or changes can affect Awning. Their terms apply to your use of them.

14. Disclaimers#

Awning is provided "as is" and "as available". We do not promise that it will be uninterrupted or error-free, that a domain or number will remain available, that any business will make sales, or that AI output is accurate. Awning is not a party to sales between buyers and owners and does not guarantee any owner's goods or services.

15. Limitation of liability#

To the extent the law allows, Awning is not liable for indirect, incidental or consequential losses, lost profits or lost data, and our total liability to you for any claim is limited to the amount you paid Awning in the 12 months before the claim. Nothing in these terms limits liability that cannot be limited by law, or rights you have under the law where you live.

16. Changes#

We may change these terms. We will update the date at the top and, for material changes, give notice on awning.sh before they apply. Continuing to use Awning after that means you accept the new terms.

17. Contact#

Questions and requests: email abuse@awning.sh. To report a business, use awning.sh/report. Security issues: follow our security policy.
